More Information About Your Headaches?
Did you know headaches are one of the most common problems to affect humanity? And date back as far as 1500BC! According to the Australian Bureau Of Statistics in 1995 approximately 15% of the population were taking medication for headaches.
- Irritation of pain-sensitive structures in the head and neck. That is the Muscles, Joints, Blood Vessels, Nerves.
- Poor Posture. Such as constantly looking down at a device.
- Trauma. This could be whiplash following a car accident.
- Straining of Eyes.
- Clenching of the Jaw and Grinding teeth.
- Stress and Anxiety.
- And Many Many More.
Classic Migraine with an Aura:
Generally, these are known to be quite severe headaches. They present as a throbbing or pounding headache. And are usually located around the forehead, eyes, or temples. The pain is can be associated with an aura, which is a precursor to a migraine. These auras can be:
- Motor or speech problems.
- Visual disturbance such as Halo’s flashing lights or blind spots.
Note: not all migraines will be associated with an aura.
Migraines may be associated with nausea, vomiting, and the individual experiencing sensitivity to light and sound. The frequency and severity of these headaches will differ for each individual.
These are thought to be the most common type of Headache. Often described as tightness at the back of the head or neck. They are associated with the feeling of tension around the head. This type of headache is often eased with medication and rest.
Chronic Tension Headache:
These headaches are associated with an increase in stress levels, anxiety, fatigue, or anger. And unfortunately, DO NOT respond well to pain medication. Just like the Migraines, their intensity and severity differ for each individual.
Generally considered the most painful of any headache. Cluster headaches as their name suggest come in groups of headaches. Each attack can last minutes to hours. With the patient experiencing approximately 1-4 per day, some lasting for weeks to months. The onset of pain is quick and provides no warming. They are almost always one-sided and often described as a searing stabbing and piercing pain or like the feeling of a hot poker in the eye or through the head.
Triggers are anything that results in the patient experiencing a headache. The key is learning to identify what triggers your headache, and avoiding where possible. Some of the more common Triggers are:
- Aged cheese
Water: Are you drinking 2 Litres per day?
Food: Specific foods may trigger your headache. Such as Chocolate, cheese, alcohol, salicylates. By keeping a headache diary, you can document and trace to see if there is a common link between a certain food and a headache.
Posture: Can lead to stress on the muscle, joints ligaments. Areas to consider – Your Workstation, Car, Bed, Home Office, Couch,
Eyes: Having your eyes checked yearly is important to determine if you require glasses. Eye strain may be another causative factor in ongoing headaches.
Stress: How do you manage your stress and where is it coming from? Stress causes the release of adrenaline or cortisol and may play a part in your headaches.
Jaw: grinding your teeth, or having mal-alignment issues may be an underlying factor in your headaches.
Muscle Strength and Stability: The strength of your head and neck muscles are vitally important when addressing your headaches. Your head weighs about 4.5-5kg. of head.
