Most back pain isn’t caused by serious damage, and most people improve with the right care and by staying active. We see it in Hawthorn students hunched over laptops, office workers who sit all day, and people who’ve hurt themselves at the gym, rowing or running along the Yarra.
We commonly treat:
Your treatment may combine hands-on techniques such as soft tissue work and joint mobilisation, dry needling where it suits you, and an exercise program through our injury rehabilitation service. We’ll explain what we find and what to expect, and you’ll leave knowing what you can do at home.

Sciatica is pain that travels from your lower back or buttock down the back of your leg, sometimes with tingling, numbness or weakness. It happens when the sciatic nerve, or one of the nerve roots that form it, is irritated, often by a disc or tight structures around it.
At your first visit we’ll check how your nerves, muscles and joints are working to work out where the irritation is coming from. Treatment is aimed at easing pain, settling the irritated area and getting you moving again, with exercises you can do between sessions. If anything suggests you need a scan or a doctor’s review, we’ll tell you and refer you.

Your first appointment runs up to 45 minutes. We’ll ask about your pain, your work and your activity, check how you move, and explain what we think is going on. You will always receive a hands on treatment and leave with a crystal clear outline and pathway back to doing the things you love.
You don’t need a GP referral. We have HICAPS onsite for direct claiming and welcome GP Chronic Disease Management plans.

Osteopaths assess and treat many people with sciatica. We carry out a thorough examination, use hands-on treatment, exercise and advice. We’ll tell you at your first visit whether we think we can help, or whether you need a referral to another specialist.
It depends on how long you’ve had the pain and what’s causing it. We’ll give you an estimate after your first assessment and review it as you improve.
For most back pain, staying gently active helps more than bed rest. We’ll show you which movements are safe for you right now. Regular short movement breaks are generally better than 1 longer session.
