Neck pain is such a common problem that 1 in 5 people currently suffer from it at any one time. In fact, over a person’s lifetime, their chances of experiencing neck pain is nearly 50%! WOW

Common Neck Pain Symptoms:

Neck pain is one of the most commonly treated injuries by our team here at Equilibrium Sports and Spinal.  This frustrating and often painful condition can  present in many forms. These include: 

  • Acute wry neck – Inability to turn the head.
  • Muscular spasm and tightness 
  • Headaches and Migraines
  • Pain radiating down from the neck to the arm, – Numbness and Tingling

What are Common Causes?

Neck pain can be caused by dysfunction in a range of different structures within the neck. The two most common structures that cause pain are the cervical discs and the cervical facet joints. Once these structures are injured they cause the surrounding muscles and ligaments to become tight, causing even more discomfort within the area. facet-joint
Common causes of neck pain can also specifically relate to muscle or soft tissue sprains where the body has been exposed to unexpected forces. This could be through sporting activities, a car accident or even instances where an awkward position is adopted for a prolonged period of time  – such as sleeping without a supportive pillow!

Tips on how to avoid neck pain:

  • Make sure your office is set up ergonomically (computer screen at correct height)
  • Make sure you have a good office chair – with adequate support
  • Take a 5 minute break and get out of your chair at least every hour
  • Make sure your pillow is giving you the support you need while you sleep. 
  • Ask your therapist to provide a list of safe /neck stretches and mobility routine specific for you
