Can An Osteopath Help With Neck Pain?

What are some common neck pain symptoms?

Any injury to, or pain in the neck area can radiate beyond the neck and into the skull. It is also common or pain to refer down the back and into the arms and across the shoulder blades. Symptoms can include difficulty or pain when moving the neck, particularly when turning the head side to side. Stress and tension are also common symptoms of neck pain which can lead to further tightening of the neck, shoulder and jaw muscles. It is also common for people to develop headaches, light headedness and dizziness.

  • Neck pain can be linked to poor desk ergonomics.
  • Prolonged periods in one position
  • Weak muscles

The most common reason is posture-related strain, often bought on by sitting in a hunched or slouched position for long periods. Sleeping with your neck at an unusual angle or with a poor-quality pillow. The best remedies for this type of pain are to sit straighter, take breaks, check your desk ergonomics and chair position, make sure your pillow is supportive – and not to sleep on your stomach if you can avoid it.

Chronic muscle imbalances, strain to the joints in the neck from injury or overuse / wear and tear are also culprit of neck pain. In such cases inflammation may develop in the joints and surrounding tissues that can cause significant discomfort. It is common for such pain to radiate and cause more complex pain.

The shock-absorbing discs can also be strained. As with a low back disc injury, these can be painful themselves, but more commonly can affect nearby nerves which may result in pain, tingling and possible numbness into the shoulder or arm.

Most neck issues will dissipate on their own within a few days. You can help it along by being aware of, and improving your posture. The application of heat to the site of pain, ensuring an ergonomically sound workstation, and addressing your muscles and joints through mobility and stretching. A few simple adjustments and a little awareness may be all it takes to rid yourself of your neck pain.

When problems do not resolve on their own, you may need to seek help. An Osteopath will take a holistic approach, looking not just at your neck, but your whole body and the environment you live and work in. You can expect your Osteopath to carefully diagnose your pain through a thorough assessment and then begin your management with a range of approaches, including:
