In the past few weeks I have been asked a number of times “Why become an Osteopath?” Its a question I get asked relatively often. And my answer has not changed in the 13 years treating patients, or 18 years being involved in the Osteopathic world. Yep Osteopathy is a full time, 5 year double degree. I don’t want to think about how many exams we had, nor the reams of scrap paper I went through studying, learning muscle actions, various treatment technique’s and the vast amount of disease and dysfunctions our body’s are subjected to over the course of our lives.
I often laugh thinking about sitting in exams, contorting my body in various ways, trying to replicate a treatment technique, or a muscles action, only to look across and see my classmate doing the same thing. But thats was all many moons ago. So why become an Osteopath? Simple, to have an impact on other peoples health and wellbeing. Cliched I know, but the truth.
I wanted a career, where I could make a difference in other people lives. A desk job wasn’t for me, and I was never going to make it to the AFL. After 2 knee surgeries myself, the best response in my recovery came not surprisingly from hands of an Osteopath. And so my journey began. Some 16 years later I would establish Equilibrium Sports and Spinal clinic in Glen Iris.
The clinic was set up to try create an environment promoting and encouraging individuals to seek better health and wellbeing in their everyday lives with the assistance of Osteopathy, Myotherapy and Exercise Rehabilitation. Our small team of practitioners, Ashley Gudgeon and Brooke Robertson all share that same common goal; wanting to impact others lives positively through Osteopathy and Myotherapy. We treat everything from headaches to back pain, shoulder pain to hip pain, low back pain to foot pain and everything in between. We treat all our patients like elite athletes. Whether they are training for the Olympics or trying to run their first 5km fun run. They are all elite athlete in our eyes.
Since moving into the Glen Iris community just over 2 years ago, we have helped over 5000 people, and looking to improve on this number as we continue to grow. We have branched out into our local community, having strong links to Ashburton, Hawthorn, Malvern and Glen Iris local communities. We are a sponsor of the Malvern Lacrosse club and proud supporter of the RunLikeCrazy running group. We are constantly looking for new ways to make a difference in our local community. As it is these people, the every day mums and dads, we see day in day out, that make our job so enjoyable and rewarding.
We succeed in delivering the best possible care because we are passionate about what we do, and why we are doing it.
